How long will I wait on Homechoice before I get a home?
If you are looking for a social or affordable home, people who are in a higher band of need or eligible for the direct lets register are likely to be housed more quickly.
On the 7th April 2025 there were 23,720 households on the Homechoice register.
There are an estimated 33,000 social and affordable homes in Cornwall, in 2024/2025 there were 1,285 lettings through Homechoice and 197 direct lets.
Whether people achieve a home depends on:-
- The circumstances of the households, for example, band of need.
- The type of home and area. Some types of house and areas are more in popular than others and have more competition. Bungalows and detached houses are popular, flats are less desirable. Towns have the most social housing. Some parishes have very few social and affordable homes available.
- Newly built usually attract more bids, but households need a local connection.
- Some homes are only available for certain types of household, for example people who need an adapted home, housing for older people, or supported housing.
